General Instructions

Insecticide Resistance Warning

For insecticide resistance management VANTAL 18 EW is a Group 6A insecticide. Some naturally occurring insect biotypes resistant to VANTAL 18 EW and other Group 6A insecticides may exist through normal genetic variability in any insect population. The resistant individuals can eventually dominate the insect population if VANTAL 18 EW and other Group 6A insecticides are used repeatedly. The effectiveness of VANTAL 18 EW on resistant individuals could be significantly reduced. Since occurrence of resistant individuals is difficult to detect prior to use, Cheminova Pty Limited accepts no liability for any losses that may result from failure of VANTAL 18 EW to control resistant insects. VANTAL 18 EW may be subject to specific resistance management strategies. For further information contact your supplier, Cheminova representative or local agricultural department agronomist.

Crop Specific Strategy: VANTAL 18 EW should not be applied more than the following number of times:

Apples, Citrus, Hops, Pears: One spray per season

Cotton, Strawberries: Two sprays per season

Tomatoes: Two sprays per crop if mites are present, five sprays if mites are not present

In addition, VANTAL 18 EW should not be applied in two consecutive seasons or crops without an unrelated chemical being used in between. Alternate VANTAL 18 EW with approved miticides from other chemical groups. Consult your chemical supplier or technical consultant for advice on chemical groups.

Crop Monitoring

Effective control depends upon regular monitoring of crops. Check crops regularly (every 3 to 5 days) during the season.

Mixing

Measure the required amount of VANTAL 18 EW, add to the partly filled spray tank, and then add the remainder of the water. If oil is recommended, add this after the VANTAL 18 EW is well mixed. Wetting agent is not required.

Application to Cotton

Preferably use aircraft fitted with Micronair atomisers.

Ground: Use inter-row droppers fitted with nozzles spraying towards the cotton rows. Inter-row nozzles should be level with or just below the canopy.

Application to apples, pears and citrus

Mixing instructions for apple and pear applications:

To achieve 750 mL AGRIMEC + 5 L Summer oil/ha apply spray at the following mixing rates:

1000 L/ha (minimum) - 75 mL (VANTAL 18 EW) - 500 mL (Summer Oil)

1500 L/ha - 50 mL (VANTAL 18 EW) - 335 mL (Summer Oil)

2000 L/ha - 37.5 mL (VANTAL 18 EW) - 250 mL (Summer Oil)

2500 L/ha - 30 mL (VANTAL 18 EW) - 200 mL (Summer Oil)

VANTAL 18 EW plus summer oil has very occasionally caused slight fruit russetting on some pear varieties particularly Anjou and other sensitive varieties when used alone or when other products are applied sequentially. A very small amount of temporary apple fruit blemishing has been associated with low water volume applications.

DO NOT apply VANTAL 18 EW to apples or pears before or after applications of Delan* or Captan. The Directions for Use and Precautions on summer oil labels should be followed carefully. Certain conditions may play a part in the occurrence of this damage.

DO NOT make applications:

  • when temperatures exceed 28C or are expected to exceed 28C within 48 hours after application,
  • under poor or slow drying conditions, or
  • with equipment that may leave large droplets on fruit after application.

APPLICATION BY DILUTE SPRAYING

Use a sprayer designed to apply high volumes of water up to the point of runoff and matched to the crop being sprayed.

Set up and operate the sprayer to achieve even coverage throughout the crop canopy. Apply sufficient water to cover the crop to the point of run-off. Avoid excessive run-off.

The required water volume may be determined by applying different tests volumes, using different settings on the sprayer, from industry guidelines or expert advice.

Add the amount of product specified in the Directions for Use table for each of 100L water. Spray to the point of run-off.

The required dilute spray volume will change and the sprayer set up and operation may also need to be changed, as the crop grows.

APPLICATION BY CONCENTRATE SPRAYING

Use a sprayer designed and set up for concentrate spraying (that is a sprayer which applies water volumes less than those required to reach the point of runoff) and matched to the crop being sprayed.

Set up and operate the sprayer to achieve even coverage throughout the crop canopy using your chosen water volume.

Detemine an appropriate dilute spray volume (See Dilute Spraying above) for the crop canopy. This is needed to calculate the concentrate mixing rate.

The mixing rate for concentrate spraying can then be calculated in the following way:

EXAMPLE ONLY

- Dilute spray volume as determined above: For example 1500L/ha

- Your chosen concentrate spray volume: For example 500L/ha

- The concentration factor in this example is: 3 x (i.e. 1500L/500L=3)

- If the dilute label rate is 15mL/100L, then the concentrate rate becomes 3 x 15 that is 45mL/100L of concentrate spray.

- The chosen spray volume amount of product per 100L water and the sprayer set up and operation may need to be changed as the crop grows.

- For futher information on concentrate spraying, users are advised to consult relevant industry guidelines, undertake appropriate competency training and follow industry Best Practices.

Compatibility

VANTAL 18 EWis compatible with Summer Spray Oils, Codacide*, Larvin 375, methomyl, Ovasyn* EC and with most commonly used insecticides and fungicides. DO NOT apply with ULV formulations. Mixtures with more than one of the above are not recommended. As formulations of other manufacturers' products are beyond the control of Cheminova and the quality of water may vary with location, all mixtures should be tested prior to mixing commercial quantities.

Restraints

DO NOT use if rainfall is expected before spray has dried as reduced efficacy may result.

DO NOT apply to cotton under visible stress.

DO NOT make more than two applications to cotton in any one season. Refer to the Insecticide Resistance Warning.

Protection of wildlife, fish, crustaceans and environment

DO NOT apply under weather conditions, or from spraying equipment, that may cause spray to drift from the target area. Dangerous to fish and other aquatic organisms.

DO NOT contaminate streams, rivers or waterways with the chemical or used containers. Dangerous to bees. DO NOT spray any plants in flower while bees are foraging. Studies indicate that when abamectin comes into contact with soil it readily and tightly binds to the soil and becomes inactive over time.

Safety Directions

Harmful if inhaled or swallowed. DO NOT inhale spray vapour. May irritate the eyes and skin. Wash hands after use. When opening the container, preparing spray wear elbow-length PVC gloves and half facepiece respirator with organic vapour/gas cartridge or canister. If applying by hand, wear cotton overalls buttoned to the neck and wrist (or equivalent clothing) and elbow-length PVC gloves, After each day's use, wash gloves, contaminated clothing and respirator, and if rubber, wash with detergent and warm water.

Storage

Store in the closed original container in a dry, cool, well ventilated area out of direct sunlight.

Disposal

Triple or preferably pressure rinse containers before disposal. Add rinsings to the spray tank. DO NOT dispose of undiluted chemicals on site. If recycling, replace cap and return clean containers to recycler or designated collection point. If not recycling, break, crush, or puncture and bury empty containers in a local authority landfill. If no landfill is available, bury the containers below 500 mm in a disposal pit specifically marked and set up for this purpose clear of waterways, desirable vegetation and tree roots. Empty containers and product should not be burnt.

Precautions

Re-entry Period

DO NOT allow entry into treated areas until spray has dried, unless wearing cotton overalls buttoned to the neck and wrist (or equivalent clothing) and chemical resistant gloves. Clothing must be laundered after each day's use.

Precaution

Do not use human flaggers/markers unless they are protected by engineering controls such as enclosed cabs.
