Introducing Jessica Taaffe

Jessica Taaffe is a student with a big mission – she wants to save the world using regenerative agriculture.

A former city kid, Jessica is completing a Diploma of Science, Regenerative Agriculture at Southern Cross University, and was one of 10 finalists in the inaugural LEAD program. In her entry she chose to focus on sustainability, exploring the meaning, practices and behaviours that need to change for us to be truly sustainable and feed the growing world.

This is a little of what she had to say:

Sustainability means that we can continue to grow food around the country for generations to come without destroying the environment simultaneously. It means that we can grow food without turning soil into infertile dirt. It means that farmers can rely on their soil water holding capacity through drought-stricken times. It means that everyone in Australia has access to nutrient-dense, sustainably grown food to nourish their bodies.

I do not know everything that I need to know about sustainability in agriculture, but I hope my studies and establishing a farm of my own will help me with this. What I do know is that my purpose in life is to make sure that children and adults around Australia are given the tools to become intelligent and meaningful consumers. I want everyone to know the importance of sustainability within the agricultural sector.

If we continue to not educate kids about agriculture and the food system, they cannot connect the dots of where their food comes from. How can we expect them to make sustainable food choices if we do not teach them these skills?

In November, I will be moving to Stanthorpe to establish a farm using regenerative practices. My vision is that this farm will double as an education centre for people of all ages to see how food is grown, taste how amazing produce can be using sustainable practices and learn about a farming system that can improve the earth rather than destroy it. I feel a great responsibility to show people that we can make a change and make a difference.

As a woman in agriculture and as an original city kid, I will not let anything get in my way of being a leader in the industry. I will not stop until there is a shift in Australian agriculture.
